Rural tourism have an increasingly role. The best way, for those tourists who wish to experience the area and the country they are visiting, is to move away from major urban centers and explore the rural areas and their rich offer.
Project ''HIKING EUROPE - Discovering rural Europe through hiking trails'' is focused on diversifying the tourism offer through the creation of new tourism products in areas traditionally facing mass tourism. This would allow sustainable tourism development at the territorial level, the extension of the season, reducing the concentration of tourists in certain places, promoting cohesion, sustainability and participation of the local community.
The main objective of the project is to promote the transnational networks of rural tourist routes through several hiking itineraries throughout Europe, in order to create an alternative to mass tourism based on the model of "sun and sea" and high concentrations of visitors to specific locations. Regional Development Agency DUNEA is only Croatian partner, with partners from Italy, Spain, Irland, Austria and Germany.
Expected results are determination of technical criteria for the definition of the tourism product, detailed mapping of local cultural and natural values and stakeholders, the inclusion of micro, small and medium-sized businesses that offer products and services at the local level and training for them, HikingEurope web platform for information about the project and the tourist offer of each region, strategy to promote HikingEurope using social networks.
